If you're looking for an alternative to chocolate this Easter there are plenty to consider, but none quite so stylish as a vase full of freshly cut spring flowers.

Where Easter flowers are concerned, daffodils are often the first that come to mind. The bright yellow heads poking out of the warming soil after a bitter winter are a familiar sight this time of year. They're an unmissable sign that spring is on the way.

Although daffodils get all the glory at Easter time, there are other flowers that have Easter connotations, so why not mix it up this year and wow your guests with an unusual combination of breathtaking blooms? After all, presentation is key when adding that little extra something to your Easter celebrations.

So let's take a look at your options, and hear from Master Florist, Simon Lyons on what stunning selection of Easter flowers will make your Sunday dinner a memorable affair. Or if you're going to be the guest this year, be the guest that brings the gift that's so much more intriguing than a calorie-laden chocolate egg.

Origins of Easter

Originally a pagan affair, much of the Easter iconography revolves around birth, renewal, revival and resurrection, life returning to the earth after the harshness of winter. Now Easter is mainly a Christian event and represents the most important date in the Christian calendar.

Many churches across the world hold flower festivals when the whole church is filled with displays of spring flowers, some are even made into scenes from the Easter Story.

Passion Flowers

These have particular significance for Christians. Discovered by Spanish missionaries in South America in the 15th Century, each part of the flower has symbolic meaning. They named the plant “Espina de Cristo" which means Christ's thorns, and the various fronds of the plant have come to symbolise different parts of the crucifixion story.

Lily

The majestic lily has classic connotations and adds a touch of simplistic class to any dining table. Easter Lilies are often white and represent a sign of Purity and Goodness. View our striking New Dawn arrangement in our online shop.

Tulips

A great alternative to daffodils, yet just as bright and as an added bonus can come in colours other than just yellow! We'd suggest a combination of yellows and purples and reds for the ultimate Easter effect. View our Double Bubble Tulips here.

Master Florist, Simon Lyons recommends:

Easter is a gorgeous time of year to either brighten your igloo with fragrant cream narcissus sweet scented pale blue hyacinth and white helebore. Or, if you feel like treating a loved one or friend, we have a stunning plethora of both pastel and vivid roses, heavily scented lilies, majestic cymbidiums and pink cherry blossom.

For a great price you can have a huge array of coloured tulips, and of course the electric yellow of the trumpet daffodils, a hark to the welcoming spring!
